Psalm 1 | Delight in God
Note: This post is part of a series of brief devotional reflections upon the Psalms. Before reading the devotional below, take a moment to open your Bible and read the entirety of Psalm 1:1-6.
“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked...” - Psalm 1:1
Here we are given a clear picture and warning of the deceitful way of sin and how it sneaks into the life of a man. It is not often that he rapidly sets his course against the Lord, but rather in progressing degrees of subtlety. How does a life of misery begin? Through the neglect of the counsel of God and the acceptance of the counsel of the world. The allegorical man simply takes the ways of the world for a test drive; he goes with them for a casual walk. No sooner does the man begin to walk than he finds himself standing in the company of bad friends with a deceptive sense of camaraderie, the sinister brotherhood of rebelliousness. Finally, after lingering a while he has grown numb to the inner beckoning of God and makes this way of life his permanent residence. He takes a seat among those who live out their days mocking, in word and deed, the very God who created them. This was not the course he had in mind at the start of his cavalier stroll away from the truth, but this is always the destination to which the counsel of the world will deliver you.
We must take great care of what influences we are living under. It is evident from this inspired poem that the quantity and quality of our delight is ultimately determined by what we are delighting in. The man who would be truly happy is the man whose, “delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.”
May we delight in God above all else and earnestly seek him through his Word each day.
