The Proper Interpretation of Reality

”For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding,” (Proverbs 2:6).

The Reformation Study Bible note on this verse provides a simple, yet very helpful reminder. It reads, “No matter how much we are engaged in the task of searching for knowledge through our human experience in the world, the source of all wisdom is God. He must provide the wisdom necessary for the proper interpretation of reality.”

The key thought for consideration here is the phrase “the proper interpretation of reality.” There are many proposed ‘interpretations of reality’ stirring about throughout our society. However, it is not politicians, universities, activists, media tycoons, or the autonomous individual who are the arbiters of truth. In the words of Jesus’ prayer to his Father, "Your Word is truth," (John 17:17).

God alone can give the soul true knowledge and understanding. If we would be wise, we must seek the Lord and humbly receive his Word. According to the progression of the proverb quoted above,

“Then,” and only then, “you will understand righteousness and justice and equity, every good path,” (Proverbs 2:9).
